Red Wattle Sows

Our first sow about to have babies

The Red Wattle is a large, red hog with a fleshy wattle attached to each side of the neck.  The wattles have no known function.  They are a single gene characteristic and usually pass to crossbred offspring.  The Red Wattle comes in a variety of shades of red, some with black specks or patches, and red and black hair.  Some individuals are nearly black.  the head and jowl are clean and lean, the nose is slim, and ears are upright with drooping tips.  The body is short coupled and the back slightly arched.

Red Wattles adapt to a wide range of climates.  Their active foraging makes them a good choice for consideration in outdoor or pasture-based swine production.  Red wattle hogs are known for hardiness and rapid growth rate.  They produce a lean meat that has been described as flavorful and tender.

The wattle hogs are larger in size and have been known to reach weights of over 1600 lbs.  With 1000 to 1200 lbs to be common, but in spite of their size, they are very gentle.

A red wattle boar will greatly improve the quality and growth rate on pigs, if used on regular sows in a hog operation.

The meat is similar to a beef-pork mixture in taste and claimed by many to be the best tasting sausage they have ever eaten.  They are fast gaining and it is not unusual to reach weights of over 60 lbs at 8 weeks or 300 lbs at 5 months.  A word of caution,  the wattle gene is very strong and there are many hogs out there that carry it, and have little or nothing else in common with a high quality wattle hog;  except the wattles.  To watch us grow click on the following link.Watch Us Grow
